My Approach to Psychotherapy

Inclusive

I work with adults at any stage in their life inclusive of all expressions of gender, sexuality, religion, politics and any other ways of dividing people.

Focused on you

Your experience and your concerns form the heart of my interest.  It is your experience that I want to explore with you. Your take on the world, the aspects of life that challenge you and the difficulties you need support to resolve. Life is difficult and it can be confusing to navigate alone. My experience with psychotherapy is that we can grow in understanding, self-awareness and resilience. We can discover new ways of tackling things and a freedom to be our fullest and most alive selves.

A therapeutic relationship

I believe the most useful aspect of psychotherapy is the relationship we develop with each other. Over time and as trust builds it becomes possible to talk openly about your deepest experience. We will go slowly and listening carefully and noticing each step along the way.

Unconscious process

I am interested in what lies beneath the surface. How you are in your everyday life is usually an adaptation to your circumstances. We can be very creative at dealing with traumas and the difficulties we experience along the way. The trouble is, we often get stuck and the way we have always done things stops being useful.

Past experience

Revisiting our history and retelling our story can be a powerful way of understanding how we had to adapt. Also, we can be skilled at keeping more difficult things out of awareness, deep in our unconscious. Whilst again this can be a successful strategy for a time, there can also be a lot of emotional clutter that we’ve hidden away which comes up in unhelpful ways and holds us back. Psychotherapy is a great opportunity to look at these deeper aspects of the self.
